What Is a Material and Finish Consult?
A material and finish consult is a visit where you see and handle real cabinet samples in your own space before choosing. We bring sample doors in the six door styles we build, in white oak, walnut, maple and paint-grade poplar, finished in each of our finish systems, plus edge samples of the three box substrates. You see grain, sheen and colour in your light, against your floor and counters.
It is the fastest way to make a decision that most people agonize over for weeks. It is also the best protection against the most common regret in a kitchen renovation: a colour or species that looked right online and wrong in the room. For the full catalogue, see our materials page.

Finish Comparison
| Finish | Look | Durability | Repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rubio Monocoat / Osmo oil | Natural, low sheen | Good | Spot repair at home |
| UV-cured conversion varnish | Clear or pigmented, even sheen | Excellent | Shop refinish |
| Benjamin Moore Scuffx | Painted, scuff resistant | Very good | Touch-up |
| Benjamin Moore Advance | Painted, smooth | Good | Touch-up |
Book the consult at the right time of day
We try to visit when you use the kitchen most. Evening west light warms oak and walnut; morning north light cools whites. The sample board you approve should be judged in that light.
How Material Choices Affect Price
Door style sets the per-linear-foot band. Species and finish move you within it.
| Door style | Per linear foot |
|---|---|
| Shaker | $350-$500 |
| Flat-slab wood | $400-$600 |
| Paint-grade poplar | $500-$750 |
Inset doors add roughly 15-20% because every reveal has to be even. Melamine-faced ply boxes lower the cost; Baltic Birch is our standard.
Common Decisions We Help With
Paint or wood?
Many clients land on two-tone: wood island, painted perimeter.
Which white?
We bring warm, neutral and cool whites in Scuffx so you can see them against your counter.
Oil or varnish?
Oil for a natural feel and home repair; varnish for maximum durability. Then take the decision into a 3D CAD design or a refacing quote.
How Species and Finishes Age in a Toronto Kitchen
White oak
Rift-sawn white oak under hardwax oil stays light and slightly warms over the first year. Under clear conversion varnish it holds its colour longer. Oak resists dents well, which suits busy family kitchens.
Walnut
Walnut starts dark and chocolate-toned, then lightens slightly toward a warmer, honey-brown over several years of daylight. Islands near south or west windows change the most. We show you an aged sample next to a fresh one.
Maple
Hard maple is dense and pale, and ambers gently over time under clear finishes. It takes subtle stains evenly.
Painted finishes
Benjamin Moore Scuffx resists scuffs and marks in high-traffic spots like lower doors and drawer fronts. Advance gives a smoother, furniture-like finish. Both are sprayed and cured in our booth.
Matching New Work to Existing Cabinets
For kitchen additions, built-ins next to an existing kitchen or a replacement door, we take a door or drawer front to the shop. For paint, we colour-match in Benjamin Moore Advance. For wood, we build a stain and oil sample board on the same species. Aged wood never matches new wood perfectly on day one, so we show you the sample beside the original in your light before production.
