What Is Custom Home Office Cabinetry?
Custom home office cabinetry is a built-in desk, storage and shelving system designed around how you work. Instead of a flat-pack desk pushed against a wall with a power bar on the floor, the desk is part of a cabinet run with cable routes, file drawers and closed storage for the printer and router. It is built in our GTA shop in the same Baltic Birch, hardwood and Blum hardware as our custom kitchen cabinets.
Most of our home office work is in converted bedrooms in houses around Forest Hill, Moore Park and Summerhill, and in condo closets and dens where every inch matters. The scope ranges from a single 8-foot desk wall to a full floor-to-ceiling library with a desk in the middle.
Types of Home Offices We Build
Desk walls
A desk run with uppers or open shelves above. The most popular starter scope at $6,500-$9,500.
Floor-to-ceiling libraries
Shelving to the ceiling with a desk inset, lateral files below and LED lighting in the shelf fronts. This is the Forest Hill scope in our case study.
Two-person offices
Two work surfaces with a shared printer cabinet, each with its own cable routes and drawer pedestal.
Closet and den offices
Shallow desks behind pocket or bi-fold doors for condos and small homes. See also compact space cabinetry.
What Does a Built-In Home Office Cost?
| Scope | Size | Price range |
|---|---|---|
| Desk wall with uppers, paint-grade | 8 ft | $6,500-$9,500 |
| Desk + lateral files + bookcase, white oak | 12 ft | $10,000-$15,000 |
| Floor-to-ceiling wall + desk, rift-sawn oak | 16 ft | $16,000-$22,000 |
Species, ceiling height and the number of drawers versus open shelves move the price within each band.
Plan the cables first
We draw every cable route in CAD: monitor arms, docking stations, printer, router and a power bar inside a ventilated cabinet. It is the difference between a clean office and a pretty desk with a mess behind it.
When Does a Built-In Office Make Sense?
If you work from home three or more days a week, a built-in gives you a proper desk height, real storage and a background you do not have to tidy before every call. It also adds resale value, because buyers see a finished room rather than a spare bedroom. Clients often pair a home office with built-in storage elsewhere in the house so the finish matches.
Common Home Office Problems We Solve
Cords everywhere
Fixed with grommets, trays and chases drawn into the CAD model.
A desk at the wrong height
Fixed by building the work surface to your chair, with a keyboard tray if needed.
Files with nowhere to go
Fixed with lateral file drawers on Blum full-extension runners.
A spare room that has to stay a guest room
Fixed with a Murphy bed integrated into the wall unit. For commercial spaces, see office workspace cabinetry.
Planning Your Home Office: A Checklist
Before the design visit, list everything that has to live in the room and everything that has to plug in. A typical list: two monitors on arms, a docking station, a laptop, a printer, a router, a desk lamp, phone chargers and a shredder. Add paper storage, whether you need hanging files, and how many people use the room.
Then measure your chair. Sit with your feet flat and your elbows at 90 degrees, and measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm. That number, minus the thickness of the keyboard, is your ideal desk height. We build to it.
Think about the background. If you are on video calls, the wall behind you matters. Closed doors behind the chair, open shelving to one side and a matte finish keep the frame calm. Glossy paint can reflect ring lights.
Choosing Materials for an Office
Rift-sawn white oak
Straight grain that looks even on camera and handles daily wear. Our Forest Hill office used it with Osmo hardwax oil.
Walnut
Darker and warmer, good for a traditional study. It deepens in colour over time.
Paint-grade
Any colour, matched to your trim. Benjamin Moore Advance sprayed and cured in our booth.
Caring for Office Cabinetry
Desk surfaces see the most wear. Hardwax oil can be refreshed in place; painted surfaces benefit from a desk pad under the keyboard. Blum runners on file drawers carry full hanging files for years, and the hinges adjust with a screwdriver.
Questions to Ask Any Office Cabinet Maker
- Will you set the desk to my height or build a standard 30 inches?
- How will cables get from the desk to the outlet?
- Will the file drawers take letter or legal hanging files?
- Can the printer and router live inside a ventilated cabinet?
- Is a Murphy bed an option if the room has to double as a guest room?
Home Offices Across the GTA
We build home offices in converted bedrooms across Forest Hill, Moore Park and Summerhill, two-person offices in Danforth Village family homes and closet offices in St. Lawrence and CityPlace condos. Every one is drawn in CAD with cable routes before anything is cut, the same way our Toronto cabinet makers plan a kitchen.
