The Local Problem

Mid-Century Kitchen in North York Feeling Cramped?

Opening a 1950s Don Mills kitchen to the family room

The original kitchen is a narrow room cut off from the living space, and the family wants an island where the wall stands.

Why it happens here: Don Mills was planned from 1952, with its first residents arriving in 1953, so many houses keep a mid-century room plan. Taking out a wall is a structural change that needs a City of Toronto permit.

Our fix: We model the open layout and custom kitchen cabinets in 3D, share drawings with your contractor for the permit, and build once the new walls are templated.

Three failures account for 80% of GTA customer complaints.

  • Wrong fit

Installer skipped laser templating; cabinets arrive 3/8 inch short of the wall.

Our fix: Proliner 3D laser templating after cabinet removal catches odd walls to 1/16 inch. See how

  • Wrong finish

Contractor-grade paint instead of UV-cured conversion varnish; drawers chip in six months.

Our fix: Benjamin Moore Scuffx or Rubio Monocoat finish that stands up to daily use. See how

  • Wrong hardware

Generic big-box hinges without soft-close; drawers slam, boxes rack within a year.

Our fix: Blum Legrabox runners and Blumotion hinges with a lifetime mechanical rating. See how

Process

From Permit Drawings to Install Day

1 week of CAD design and change rounds, 3-4 weeks of CNC fabrication and finishing, 3-4 days on site.

  1. 01 / Step

    Free CAD quote request

Send a few photos and rough sizes through the form. We reply within 1-2 business days to book a design visit.

  2. 02 / Step

Cabinet removal + Proliner laser templating

Old boxes come out first so the laser reads true wall geometry to 1/16 inch, not the line of the old cabinets.

  3. 03 / Step

    OnShape 3D CAD walkthrough + sign-off

A Red Seal lead walks you through door placement, drawer stacks and appliance panels. Change rounds happen here, on paper.

  4. 04 / Step

CNC fabrication + finishing in our GTA shop

Boxes are cut on the Biesse Rover CNC, edge banded and finished in our booth over 3-4 weeks while your kitchen stays clean.

  5. 05 / Step

    3-4 day install + post-install walkthrough

WSIB-covered crews level, scribe and adjust every door, then walk the finished room with you before the last payment.

Post-War Homes and Towers We Know

Don Mills and Bayview Village are full of 1950s and 1960s post-war houses and bungalows. Many kitchens are on their second or third renovation, and owners usually want more storage, an island and a better connection to the family room.

York Mills, Lawrence Park and Bedford Park have larger houses where full custom kitchens with pantry walls, home offices and walk-in closets are common scopes.

Willowdale and the Yonge and Sheppard corridor have dense condo towers with compact suites, concrete walls and fixed stub-outs. Status Certificate submissions are included on every condo kitchen.

Planning a Post-War Family Kitchen

Post-war kitchens were often small and closed. Opening to the dining or family room changes the layout, so we model options in 3D before choosing.

Walls in these houses are straighter than downtown heritage homes, but floors can dip where walls were removed. Laser templating still pays off.

Many clients add a walk-in closet or home office in the same project, built in the same finish.

Delivering Along the 401 and Yonge Corridor

North York deliveries run along the 401 and the Don Valley Parkway. Detached houses in Don Mills, Bayview Village and York Mills usually have driveway access.

Yonge and Sheppard and Willowdale condo towers run on freight elevator bookings and dock windows, and we schedule inside building hours.

Family kitchens take 3-4 days on site; condo kitchens 2-4 days depending on elevator access.

Timing a Family Kitchen

Spring and summer are busiest for family kitchens. Book 8-10 weeks ahead.

Condo kitchens are often timed around a purchase or sale; rush scheduling is available for closings.

Family Kitchen and Condo Pricing

Our published per-linear-foot rates apply: Shaker $350-$500/lf, flat-slab $400-$600/lf, paint-grade $500-$750/lf.

Yonge corridor condo galleys run $6,500-$14,000 plus $450-$900 for the Status Certificate review and submission.

Got Questions?

North York Cabinet FAQs

Can you open a 1950s Don Mills kitchen to the family room?

Yes. Don Mills houses date from 1953 on and often keep their original closed kitchens. We draw the open layout in 3D and give your contractor the drawings needed for the structural permit.

Do you handle condo submissions near Yonge and Sheppard?

Yes. Towers like those around Sheppard-Yonge station need board approval under section 98 of the Condominium Act. Our review and submission is $450-$900, typically approved within 7 business days of a signed design.

Is refacing an option for Bayview Village kitchens?

Yes, when boxes are dry and square. Refacing runs roughly 60% of a new kitchen and suits houses where the layout already works.

Can you build closets and offices in the same finish?

Yes. Walk-in closets and home offices can be built in the same finish as the kitchen and installed in one trip.

How long does a post-war family kitchen take?

4-6 weeks in the shop and 3-4 days on site, plus whatever time your contractor needs for wall work first.

Do you install in Willowdale towers on weekends?

Only if the building allows it. Most Willowdale condos limit trades to weekday hours, and we book the freight elevator inside those windows.
