Condo Closet Systems Sized for Toronto Suites

Condo closets are shallow and often behind sliding doors, so layouts favour double hang, drawers and pull-outs over open shelving. Panels are cut to fit the freight elevator and installed in a day or two.

What Is a Condo Closet System?

A condo closet system replaces the single shelf and bar that most towers ship with, using drawers, double hang, shoe storage and lighting sized for a shallow condo closet. Reach-ins in Toronto towers are usually 22 to 24 inches deep and sit behind sliding or bi-fold doors, which changes the layout: drawers have to clear the door track, and open shelving at the back tends to become a pile.

This service covers condo reach-ins and small walk-ins. House walk-ins and dressing rooms are on our walk-in closet systems page.

Types of Condo Closets

Reach-ins behind sliding doors

A centre drawer tower with double hang on one side and long hang on the other. The tower sits where it can open fully when either door slides away.

Small condo walk-ins

Walk-ins of about 6 by 7 feet, common in one- and two-bedroom suites. LED rods, a drawer stack and shoe shelves under a mirror.

Entry coat closets

Shoe pull-outs, a bench niche and upper storage for bins. For storage outside the closet, see compact space cabinetry.

Elevator-fit, every time

We measure the freight elevator, corridor and suite door before cutting a single panel. Nothing gets cut down in the hallway.

Common Condo Closet Problems

Wire shelves and sagging rods

Fixed with shop-built panels and proper rod supports.

Drawers blocked by sliding doors

Fixed by placing drawer towers where they clear the track.

Nowhere for folded clothes

Fixed with drawer stacks on Blum soft-close runners. For a media wall or Murphy bed in the same suite, see condo wall units.

Planning a Condo Closet Upgrade

Start by opening the closet doors and measuring three things: the inside width wall to wall, the depth from the back wall to the inside face of the door track, and the height to the underside of the header. Then note the door type. Sliding doors mean only half the closet is open at a time, so drawer towers have to sit where they can open fully. Bi-fold doors fold into the opening and steal a few inches on each side.

Then count what needs to go in. Most condo bedrooms have one reach-in for two people, so the layout has to split hanging and folded storage fairly. A centre drawer tower with double hang on one side and long hang on the other works for most couples.

What Fits in a 24-Inch-Deep Condo Closet

Hanging

A standard hanger needs about 21 inches of depth, so a 24-inch closet takes hanging comfortably with a little room for the door track.

Drawers

Drawers in a closet tower are usually 16 to 18 inches deep so they clear the door track and the hanging clothes beside them.

Shoes

Angled or flat shoe shelves fit at the base of the long-hang section or in the tower.

Upper storage

A shelf above the rods holds bins and luggage. In suites with 9-foot ceilings, a pull-down rod adds a second level of hanging.

Caring for a Condo Closet

Painted and melamine panels wipe clean with a damp cloth. Drawer runners need no lubrication. LED rods are long-life and low-heat. If the building settles and a door rubs, a quarter turn on the Blum hinge fixes it.

Questions to Ask Before You Hire

  • Will the drawers open fully behind my sliding doors?
  • Will the panels fit the freight elevator?
  • Can you install in one day inside building hours?
  • Are the panels shop-finished or raw melamine?
  • What warranty covers the system?
