The Local Problem

Dated Oak Kitchen in Scarborough? It May Not Need Replacing

Solid oak boxes hiding behind tired doors in post-war Scarborough homes

The kitchen works, but the oak doors are orange with age, hinges sag and the owner assumes the only fix is a full tear-out.

Why it happens here: Guildwood, Bendale and much of south Scarborough were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and most of those kitchens were redone once in the 1980s or 1990s with solid oak boxes that are still sound.

Our fix: Cabinet refacing or a sprayed paint refresh keeps the good boxes and swaps doors, drawer fronts and hinges. New boxes only go where water got in.

Three failures account for 80% of GTA customer complaints.

  • Wrong fit

Installer skipped laser templating; cabinets arrive 3/8 inch short of the wall.

Our fix: Proliner 3D laser templating after cabinet removal catches odd walls to 1/16 inch. See how

  • Wrong finish

Contractor-grade paint instead of UV-cured conversion varnish; drawers chip in six months.

Our fix: Benjamin Moore Scuffx or Rubio Monocoat finish that stands up to daily use. See how

  • Wrong hardware

Generic big-box hinges without soft-close; drawers slam, boxes rack within a year.

Our fix: Blum Legrabox runners and Blumotion hinges with a lifetime mechanical rating. See how

Process

How We Decide: Refresh or Replace

1 week of CAD design and change rounds, 3-4 weeks of CNC fabrication and finishing, 3-4 days on site.

  1. 01 / Step

    Free CAD quote request

Send a few photos and rough sizes through the form. We reply within 1-2 business days to book a design visit.

  2. 02 / Step

Cabinet removal + Proliner laser templating

Old boxes come out first so the laser reads true wall geometry to 1/16 inch, not the line of the old cabinets.

  3. 03 / Step

    OnShape 3D CAD walkthrough + sign-off

A Red Seal lead walks you through door placement, drawer stacks and appliance panels. Change rounds happen here, on paper.

  4. 04 / Step

CNC fabrication + finishing in our GTA shop

Boxes are cut on the Biesse Rover CNC, edge banded and finished in our booth over 3-4 weeks while your kitchen stays clean.

  5. 05 / Step

    3-4 day install + post-install walkthrough

WSIB-covered crews level, scribe and adjust every door, then walk the finished room with you before the last payment.

Bungalows and Backsplits We Work In

Scarborough Village, Guildwood and Cliffside have many post-war and 1960s bungalows near the Scarborough Bluffs. Many original or second-generation kitchens have solid oak or plywood boxes, which hold up far better than later particleboard.

Agincourt and Wexford have 1960s to 1980s detached homes and semis where kitchens are often oak Shaker or cathedral style. These are the classic refacing kitchens: the boxes are fine, the doors are dated.

Highland Creek has larger lots and newer homes where full custom kitchens with islands are more common.

Refresh or Replace in Scarborough

Start with the boxes. Solid oak or plywood boxes that are dry and square are ideal for refacing with new paint-grade or white oak doors, or a Benjamin Moore Scuffx paint refresh.

Replace when the sink base has water damage, boxes have racked, or the layout does not work. Bungalow kitchens are often small and closed off, and opening a wall to the dining room means a new layout.

Our refacing vs replacement calculator gives a quick comparison, and we confirm with an in-home box check before quoting.

Getting to East-End Homes

Scarborough deliveries run along the 401 and Kingston Rd. Bungalows in Guildwood, Cliffside and Scarborough Village usually have driveway access, so delivery and setup are quick.

Refacing jobs are lighter on delivery: doors and drawer fronts arrive finished from our spray booth and are hung in 2-4 days while you keep using the kitchen.

Pickering and Ajax homeowners are served by the same crews along the 401 corridor.

Timing a Refacing Project

Refacing takes 2-3 weeks and suits any season because the kitchen stays usable.

Full replacements follow our 4-6 week shop timeline; book 8-10 weeks ahead for spring and summer.

Refacing and Refresh Pricing

A paint refresh runs $2,800-$6,500 and door and drawer refacing runs $4,500-$12,000 for a full kitchen. Our Scarborough Village case study was 18 lf for $7,500-$10,000.

New kitchens use our published per-foot rates: Shaker $350-$500/lf, flat-slab $400-$600/lf, paint-grade $500-$750/lf.

Got Questions?

Scarborough Refacing and Cabinet FAQs

Is my Guildwood oak kitchen a good refacing candidate?

Often, yes. Guildwood houses date from 1957 on, and many kitchens were redone with solid oak boxes in the 1980s or 1990s. If the boxes are dry and square and you like the layout, refacing saves roughly 40%.

How much does refacing cost for an east-end bungalow?

Door and drawer refacing runs $4,500-$12,000; a Scuffx paint refresh runs $2,800-$6,500, like our Scarborough Village case study.

Can I keep cooking while you reface?

Yes. Doors are built and sprayed in our shop and hung on site in 2-4 days, so the kitchen stays usable.

What paint do you use on refreshed oak doors?

Benjamin Moore Scuffx or Advance, or UV-cured conversion varnish, sprayed and cured in our booth rather than brushed on site.

What if I want to open a Bendale bungalow kitchen to the dining room?

That is a layout change, so it means new cabinets. We design it in 3D and coordinate with your contractor, who handles the wall and any permit.

Do you serve Pickering and Ajax?

Yes. The crews that work around Highland Creek and Guildwood cover Pickering and Ajax as well.
